Quick answers

Can I use Drive Practice without iCloud?
Yes. Choose Use Locally on first launch. The timer, profiles, history, and manual entries work without an account.
Why are my day and night totals estimated?
Enable Location access so the app can use local sunrise and sunset. Without Location, Drive Practice uses an estimate.
How do I add a practice drive I forgot to time?
On the main screen, tap Add Drive Time Manually, select the profile and date, enter day and night durations, then tap Add.
How do I delete a practice?
Open Profiles, select a profile, open the practice, and use the delete action. You can also remove an entire profile from the Profiles screen.
Does automatic detection require extra hardware?
Yes. The optional beacon-assisted mode requires a compatible Bluetooth Low Energy beacon in the car. You do not need a beacon to use the timer, profiles, history, or manual entries.
Do I need to interact with the phone while an automatically detected drive is running?
No. After setup, the driver does not need to start, confirm, or stop the provisional recording. A Live Activity or notification may show that recording started in the background, but it does not require a response. Only after the drive finishes does the app ask whether to add the drive to the practice record or discard it.
How does iCloud sharing work?
Enable iCloud sync in Drive Practice, then use the sharing controls to invite another iCloud user to the driving log. Apple manages the invitation and CloudKit account access.

Step-by-step checks

Troubleshooting

The timer or Live Activity is not updating

  1. Open Drive Practice and confirm the drive is still running.
  2. Check that Notifications and Live Activities are allowed for Drive Practice in iOS Settings.
  3. Return to the app and stop/restart the practice timer if the status remains stale.
  4. Restart the device if iOS continues to show old Live Activity content.

Day/night totals do not look right

  1. Open iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Drive Practice.
  2. Allow Location access appropriate to the features you use and enable Precise Location.
  3. Check the date and time zone on the device.
  4. Remember that totals recorded without Location use an estimate.

Automatic detection does not start

  1. Confirm automatic detection is enabled and a compatible in-car beacon is paired and powered.
  2. Allow Bluetooth, Motion & Fitness, Location, and Notifications when prompted.
  3. Test this feature on a physical iPhone; beacon and background behavior cannot be fully verified in the simulator.
  4. You can always start the timer manually while automatic detection is unavailable.

A detected drive is waiting for review

  1. Wait until the vehicle is safely parked before reviewing the session.
  2. Open the post-drive notification or the pending review inside Drive Practice.
  3. Choose Add to Records if it was supervised practice, or Not Practice to discard it.

iCloud records are not syncing

  1. Confirm the device is signed in to iCloud and iCloud Drive is enabled.
  2. Confirm Drive Practice is allowed to use iCloud.
  3. Connect to the internet, reopen the app, and allow time for CloudKit to sync.
  4. If a shared log is involved, confirm the invitation was accepted with the intended Apple Account.

Compatibility

Requirements

  • iOS 17 or later, or iPadOS 17 or later.
  • Some features require iCloud, Location, Motion & Fitness, Bluetooth, or Notifications.
  • Optional beacon-assisted detection requires compatible Bluetooth beacon hardware.
  • Automatic detection and background behavior are best tested on a physical iPhone.
  • Auto Detect requires the beacon to be paired and powered, required permissions to be granted, and qualifying vehicle evidence to be available.
